This is because shapes are such an integral part of our everyday lives. .. Children are able to notice and manipulate shapes long before they begin to draw them or even learn their names. One of the earliest things that children learn is shapes. .. Providing toddlers and preschoolers with lots of practice with shapes helps them create a foundation for future learning and provides them with an advantage in many other areas of learning as well. .. Helping your child think and talk about shapes at an early age will have a profound impact on their education in the early years. .. ‘Today we continued to learn about shapes. Our focus in particular was circles. Every child is an Artist” - Pablo Picasso .. .. We couldn’t agree more with the quote above and are proud to showcase some of the Caterpillar children’s and Dragonfly children’s process art in our cloakroom. Process art is when the children are actively involved with the materials, exploring and experimenting but not considering the outcome. .. .. You will notice on the cloakroom display the children had access to a range of paints and also printing resources and the task was open ended. Saffron later cut out the shapes to create the leaves and acorns to tie in the painting with our Autumn theme. .. .. In the other activity the children were provided with a tree trunk but how they represented the leaves was their choice. We hope you like this display as much as we do. .. .. This week the children helped with our herb garden, there are many benefits to children helping you plant herbs, including: .. Healthy eating habits: Children can learn where their food comes from and how it’s grown. .. Concentration: The sights and smells of plants can help with relaxation and increase concentration. .. Fine motor skills: Children can develop their fine motor skills by sowing seeds, thinning plants, weeding, pruning, and harvesting. .. Connection with nature: Gardening can help children connect with nature and nurture living things. .. Minimizing distractions: Nature can have a soothing effect on children, helping to minimize distractions. .. Sensory Exploration: Herbs come in different textures, colors, and smells. When babies play with them, it stimulates their senses and helps them explore the world around them. .. Having herbs available allows lots of ‘learning whilst playing’ opportunities….such as in their mud kitchen recipes, yummy! Also in many play doh activities…lavender play doh is a fav…that lovely smell 💜 .. Just a few of our ‘AUTHENTIC RESOURCES’ bought at the fab @kt_bootfair_ on Sunday 🙌 .. .. ‘WHAT ARE AUTHENTIC RESOURCES?’ I hear you ask.. .. .. Instead of manufactured, child-size toys, these types of real, everyday resources offer children more meaningful experiences of exploration and discovery. .. .. Authentic resources are practical (things children see adults use and would benefit to learn to use themselves), open-ended (materials that can be used in many different ways by children of different ages and capabilities) and reflect diversity (objects linked to families’ cultural backgrounds and history). .. .. @the_curiosityapproach describe authentic resources as “real-life items that… become opportunities for intrigue, play and curiosity”, including “objects or artefacts that no longer serve their purpose within the home”. .. .. Children can also see the processes involved in manufacturing everyday items as well as the materials that are used around them. .. .. From being with an adult, children can also learn some metacognition skills. These are ‘thinking skills’ that our Nursery Practitioners can model for children by simply talking aloud. They include breaking a task down into specific steps – for example, ‘First we need to check that all the parts are here.’ .. ..
